Taiwan: Exploring a Different China
On Dec. 28, 2013, the first UMD study
abroad group focusing on both Chinese language and culture will arrive in
Taiwan, and on Dec. 30, the group will begin its first day of
class at Tamkang University ( 淡江大學) in Taipei, the capital city of
Taiwan.
A group of twelve students selected through
interviews will participate in this 3-credit winter course. In addition to
studying Mandarin Chinese, students will also enroll in classes examining the
following questions:
1.
What are the highlights in the history of Taiwan in the past 400 hundred years?
2.
How do the social morals differ between Taiwanese and American
societies?
3.
How has Taiwan been surviving as an independent country under
the shadow of China’s power?
4.
What are Confucian principles? How do modern lives in Taiwan
reflect these principles?
